What Severn does to a deck
A deck in Severn is fighting on two fronts. The sun-facing boards grey out from UV — the surface fibres break down, the colour goes flat and silver, and any stain that was on there stops doing its job. Meanwhile the shaded and tree-side boards do the opposite: under pine cover, holding moisture, they go green and slick with algae.
It’s normal to have both on the same deck, which is why a Severn deck often looks patchy rather than uniformly worn. The waterfront places have it worst — a deck or dock-side landing at Cumberland Beach or on the Severn River takes spray, shade, and constant humidity, and the algae film that builds there is a genuine slip hazard by August.
Seasonal properties compound it the same way they compound everything else. A cottage deck left three or four years without a wash builds a layer that a garden hose and a stiff brush won’t move — but a proper wash usually still brings it back. People are often surprised how much wood is left under the grey.
Severn tip: if you’re planning to stain or seal, wash first and let it dry properly. Sealer over a grey, algae-filmed board locks the problem in and peels within a season.
How we clean decks in Severn
A pressure washer is the wrong tool for wood. A jet strong enough to strip the grey also tears the boards: it raises the grain into splintery fuzz and carves lines that sanding can’t fully hide.
We work the other way around. A wood-safe cleaner does the lifting — grey weathering, algae, ground-in grime — and gentle, low pressure rinses it away. The grain stays intact, whether the boards are cedar, pressure-treated pine, hardwood, or composite. Fences, railings, and stairs get the same hand.
The result is a clean, un-furred surface that takes stain or sealer evenly and holds it longer. If a refinish is on your list, this is the right first step.

“Good job by Blair and Tyler. They were efficient and pleasant to do business with. The deck looks 100% better. Thank you.”
“When I told my wife I had hired Simcoe Proclean to power wash our deck. She was very skeptical. Our deck was in terrible shape with mold, algea, and dirty. She didn’t think it could be done. After seeing the results my wife couldn’t beleive her eyes.”
